DEWALT DPG112 Safety Glasses — Worth Grabbing?
The DEWALT DPG112 Miter Premium Vented Safety Glasses are a solid eye protection pick for magnet fishing — keeping river muck, rust flakes, and whatever else flies up off your face while you're hauling stuff out of the water.
Eye protection is the piece of kit most people skip until something gross happens. I was one of those people for longer than I should admit.
The DEWALT DPG112s are what I reach for now. Vented, comfortable enough to forget you're wearing them, and built by a brand that's been making work-site gear long enough to not embarrass itself.
They're not magnet fishing specific — nothing ever is — but they do the job, and they do it without fogging up every five minutes like cheaper pairs tend to.
I didn't start wearing eye protection consistently until a rusted bolt cap flicked up off a brake rotor I'd just pulled from the Raritan and caught me right below the eye socket. Not in the eye — just under it. Left a little mark. Could've been a lot worse and I knew it, so that was kind of the end of my "it'll be fine" era.
The DEWALTs came in a two-pack and I figured I'd try them out on the next session. First thing I noticed was that the frames don't feel like toy glasses — there's actual structure to them, the kind of rigidity you'd want on a job site rather than a pair of thin pharmacy readers with "SAFETY" printed on the temple. The venting along the top and sides is real venting, not decorative slots. That matters more than it sounds.
Fogging is the enemy. These don't fog.
I've worn safety glasses that were technically "anti-fog" and lasted about eleven minutes before turning into bathroom mirrors. The DPG112s — I've worn them for two, three hour sessions crouched over a riverbank in cool damp air and they stayed clear the whole time. Something about the venting actually doing its job plus whatever the lens coating is. I don't know the chemistry. I just know I could see.
The wraparound fit is good for keeping splash and debris from coming in the sides. That's relevant when you're swinging a wet magnet out of a canal and it's trailing water and rust in a wide arc — which, if you haven't experienced that yet, you will. The frame sits close enough to your face to actually provide coverage without pressing into your temples after an hour.
What's not great: if you wear prescription glasses, these aren't going to work over them. The fit isn't that generous. That's not really a knock on DEWALT specifically — it's just a fit thing to know going in. Also the nose piece is fixed, so if you've got a narrower face they might sit a little loose. Mine fit fine but I've got a pretty average build-of-head situation going on.
They're also just kind of ugly. Functional ugly, which is fine.
For anyone just getting into this — or someone who's been doing it a while and keeps putting eye protection in the "I'll deal with it later" pile — these are an easy pickup. They're priced like an accessory, not like a piece of premium gear, and they perform better than that price would suggest. I keep a second pair in my gear bag now specifically because they're cheap enough that losing one isn't a crisis.
The two-pack thing is actually kind of perfect. Bring a buddy, hand them a pair, everyone's got their eyes covered, nobody's picking rust out of anything later.
