Hercules 2000LB Double Sided Kit — Worth the Upgrade?

First thing I noticed when I pulled this out of the box was the weight. It's got some heft to it — not in a bad way, more like the kind of heft that tells you something's actually in there. A lot of magnets at this price feel weirdly hollow or plasticky around the casing. This one didn't.

The double-sided design is the whole point here, and it works like you'd want it to.

I took it out to a canal bridge I've been hitting for about two years now — nothing glamorous, mostly bike parts and the occasional rebar, with one genuinely weird medieval-looking bracket I still can't identify. With a single-sided magnet you've got to be deliberate about which face you're dragging. With this thing I just... didn't have to think about it as much. Drop it, drag it, let both sides do the work. I pulled a hinge plate on the very first drop that I'm pretty sure I'd walked over a dozen times with my old setup.

The rope it comes with is decent. I've swapped out kit ropes before without a second thought — usually the first thing to go — but this one felt like it had actual thickness to it. Still tied my own knot just out of habit, but I wasn't wincing when I did it.

The gloves are fine. They're gloves. Keep a backup pair anyway.

Here's the one thing I'd flag: the carabiner. It's not terrible, but it's not the part of this kit I'd trust most on a heavy snag. I had a moment under a low bridge — I'd caught something big, something that wasn't moving, and I was putting real force on the line — where I kept thinking about that carabiner more than I was thinking about the snag. Nothing failed. But I swapped it out for one I trusted more after that session and slept better for it. Probably an extra five bucks at any hardware store.

For someone who's been doing this a while and still fishing with a single-sided 500lb or 800lb magnet, this is the upgrade that actually makes sense. You're not paying for branding. You're not paying for features you don't need. You're paying for more magnet, on both sides, at a price that doesn't require a whole internal debate about whether you're being responsible with money.

2000lbs of claimed pull is never quite 2000lbs of real-world pull. That's just physics. But it's a lot more than what most people are working with.

I wouldn't hand this to someone on their first trip out — not because it's complicated, but because it's heavier and a bit more to manage when you're still figuring out technique. But for someone who's done a season or two and wants to stop leaving stuff on the bottom? Yeah, this is the one I'd tell them to get.
