Twenty-two bucks for 1000 lbs of pull from an explicitly neodymium-rated magnet. That sentence does a lot of work.
Most budget magnets in this range are vague about what's inside — they'll slap a pull number on the packaging and call it a day. Junarter at least tells you you're getting neodymium, which at this price point is more than most brands bother to say.
If you've already fished with a 500 lb magnet and you're starting to feel like you're leaving things behind — this is the obvious next move without spending more than you'd spend on dinner.
I'll be honest — I bought this mostly to see if a $22 magnet that actually says "neodymium" on the label would perform any differently than the generic 500 lb thing I started out with. Short answer: yeah, it does. Not dramatically, but enough that I noticed it the first time out.
The magnet itself feels denser than you'd expect for the price. Heavier in a good way.
First drop with this was off a footbridge outside Columbus — shallow water, muddy bottom, the kind of spot where you pull up a lot of bottle caps and rusted bolts and occasionally something that makes you genuinely stop and stare. I was using 65 ft of rope that day, which is probably overkill for that bridge but I'd just re-rigged and hadn't trimmed it yet. Point is: the magnet hit the bottom and came back with more junk than I'd normally expect from one pass. A corroded padlock, two bolts, something that might have been part of a bike frame — all in about 20 minutes. That doesn't prove anything scientifically, but it was a good first impression.
The coating on this thing held up fine through that session and the handful after it. No obvious chipping, no rust spots showing through. I've had cheaper magnets start looking rough after two or three muddy pulls. This one hasn't done that yet — and I've dragged it through some genuinely unpleasant creek bottoms.
The eyebolt threading feels solid. Not "I'd trust my life to it" solid, but solid enough that I'm not lying awake worrying about it.
Here's the thing about the 1000 lb rating — and I say this about every magnet at every price point — that number is a lab number. Flat steel plate, perfect contact, straight pull. In a riverbed you're getting maybe a third of that in real conditions, sometimes less. So don't buy this expecting to yank a cast iron safe off the bottom on your first try. You're probably working with somewhere in the 300-400 lb range in actual use. That's still meaningfully more than a 500 lb magnet gives you in the real world, and that's the actual reason to buy this over the cheaper tier.
What's not great: the rope situation. Junarter does include rope with some versions of this, but don't get attached to it. It's fine for a couple of trips — I used it long enough to test the magnet, then swapped it out for my usual paracord setup. If you're serious about this hobby even a little bit, you probably already have rope you prefer. If you're just getting started, just know the included rope is placeholder rope.
The case or pouch situation is basically nonexistent. You're just... carrying a magnet.
Who's this for? Someone who's done maybe five to ten trips with a starter kit, felt the magnet losing the fight on something heavy, and thought "I need more pull" — but doesn't want to spend $60 to find out if they're actually into this hobby. That's the exact person this is priced for. It's also a completely reasonable gift for someone who already has a basic setup and wants an upgrade without a whole conversation about it.
I'd buy it again. I'd probably keep the one I have as a secondary magnet — sometimes I'll run two lines if I'm working a wider area — and this one's light enough that it doesn't feel like dead weight when it's not the main event.
