Kratos 550 Single Sided Kit — Good Starter or Skip?

The Kratos Magnetics 550 Single Sided Classic Kit is a budget-friendly magnet fishing starter kit with 550LB pull force, coming in under $44 — making it one of the most accessible entry points into the hobby.

I'll be straight with you — $43.99 for a 550LB single-sided kit is a genuinely good deal. Not 'good for the price' good. Actually good.

This is the kit I'd hand to someone who texted me 'I want to try magnet fishing, what do I get?' It's manageable, it's cheap enough that you're not sweating it if the hobby doesn't stick, and it's not going to rip your shoulder out the first time you snag something.

It's not fancy. But it doesn't need to be.

Pull Force: 550 lbs (single-sided)
Magnet Type: Single-sided neodymium
Kit Includes: Magnet, rope, and carry bag
Price: $43.99
Best For: Beginners and kids

I opened this thing and the first thing I noticed was how manageable it felt in my hand. Not tiny — the pull force is real — but not the kind of magnet that makes you nervous handing it to a twelve-year-old, either. There's a balance to it. Single-sided, clean threading on the eyebolt, coating looked solid out of the packaging.

It felt like gear, not a toy. That matters.

I took it out to a spot I've been hitting for a while — a low pedestrian bridge over a slow-moving creek outside of town, the kind of place where you can see the bottom in the shallow parts and your brain just starts wondering what's in the deep section. Nothing dramatic on the first few drops. A rusted bracket of some kind, a couple of bent nails, what I'm pretty sure was part of a lawn chair that's been down there since at least the late nineties. Normal stuff. But the magnet was pulling clean — no slipping, no weird drag — and that's what you want on a first outing with new gear.

The rope that came with the kit is fine. Not the best rope I've used, but it's not the frayed discount-bin stuff that starts looking sketchy after two sessions. It held everything I threw at it — including one snag where I was pulling pretty hard at an angle — without any signs of stress. I'd still say keep an eye on it after heavy use, but it'll get you through plenty of sessions before you're even thinking about swapping it out.

The 550LB rating is honest, which I appreciate. Some kits oversell it. This one doesn't seem to.

Here's who I'd actually hand this kit to: someone new to the hobby, or a kid who saw magnet fishing on YouTube and will not stop asking about it. The pull force is enough to find real stuff without being so aggressive that handling it feels sketchy. Single-sided is the right call for beginners anyway — you're learning to work a magnet along a bottom or a wall, and a double-sided at this stage just adds complications you don't need yet. Get good at the technique first.

The carry bag is a nice touch for under $44. Keeps everything together, which sounds obvious, but I've had budget kits that just... didn't include one. Then you're jamming a rope and a magnet into a grocery bag and fishing line is tangling with your lunch. Not ideal.

Is there anything I'd knock it for? Honestly, not much.

The eyebolt could be a touch more robust for anyone thinking about pulling serious iron — but if you're at the point where you're yanking up old engine blocks, you've probably already graduated past a starter kit anyway. This is a beginner kit doing exactly what a beginner kit should do. It's not trying to be a $120 double-sided 1500LB setup and I respect that honesty.

If someone asked me whether to grab this as their first kit, I'd say yeah, without hesitating.
