I know. It's WD-40. You're not exactly here for a deep breakdown of a spray can. But hear me out — because I used to leave finds in a bucket of water for days trying to get hinges and locks moving, and this thing cut that process down to like twenty minutes.
Most of what you pull out of the water has been sitting there long enough that rust isn't just surface-level. It's structural. Bolts that should twist don't. Latches that should open won't. The Specialist Penetrant is a different formula from the regular blue-and-yellow stuff — it actually gets into the threads instead of just sitting on top.
At eight bucks, it's basically a no-brainer if you're doing any kind of cleanup on your finds. The smart straw that flips between stream and spray is genuinely useful — I'm not being sarcastic about that.
The first time I actually paid attention to this can was after a session on a canal bridge outside of town where I pulled up what turned out to be an old padlock — decent size, fully seized, coated in what I can only describe as a century of bad decisions. I had regular WD-40 at home. I sprayed it. I waited. Nothing. Sprayed it again. Still nothing. Ended up leaving it on a shelf where it still sits, presumably locked forever.

The flip design on this one stays attached, which sounds like a small thing until you're standing at a tailgate in the cold trying to treat a corroded bolt and the straw is just... there. Ready. Not somewhere in the gravel parking lot.
For magnet fishing specifically — the use case is pretty simple. You pull something up that's interesting but stuck. A carabiner that won't open. A toolbox latch that's been underwater long enough to become part of the toolbox. A hinge on something you actually want to see inside. Soak it with the Specialist Penetrant, let it sit fifteen to twenty minutes, come back and try again. Most of the time it works. Not always — some stuff is past saving — but way more often than I expected.
It also works fine on your own gear, which I didn't think about until I used it on a stuck magnet eyebolt and it moved on the first try.
The downsides are basically what you'd expect from any spray can. The nozzle clogged on me once after I left it in a cold car overnight — worked fine after it warmed up, but still. The can size is on the smaller end, so if you're doing a big cleanup session on a haul of multiple finds, you might burn through it faster than you'd want. Keep a spare if you do a lot of post-session work.
This isn't something you'd put on a list of magnet fishing gear and explain to someone new. It's more like the thing experienced people already have in their bag and forget to mention. If you're just getting started and you haven't pulled up anything interesting yet, it can wait. But once you start finding stuff with actual moving parts — or stuff you want to move — you're going to want it.
