Oupeng Sky 28KN Carabiner — Should You Trust It?

The first thing I noticed when I pulled one of these out of the pack was how solid it felt in my hand. Not heavy exactly — more like dense. Some cheap carabiners have this hollow, almost plasticky rattle to them when you shake them. This one didn't. It's all aluminum, gate spins clean, and the auto-lock engages the way it should — you don't have to baby it or double-check it every time you clip in.

That matters more than you'd think when your hands are wet and it's 40 degrees and you're leaning over a railing trying to clip your magnet back on before the current takes it somewhere inconvenient.

28KN is the rated load. That's 6,172 lbs. Your magnet isn't pulling anywhere near that.

I started using one of these to connect my rope to my 500lb magnet — just ran the rope through the eye bolt and clipped it off instead of tying a knot directly. Took me maybe 20 seconds. And the thing I didn't expect was how much I liked being able to swap magnets quickly. I've got a couple different setups now, and being able to unclip one magnet and clip in another without re-tying anything is genuinely useful. Not the reason I bought it, but I use that feature almost every session.

There was one afternoon on the Housatonic — cold, drizzly, the kind of day where nothing is going right — where my rope got completely tangled around a submerged branch about 15 feet down. I was pulling at weird angles, yanking sideways, putting real stress on the whole setup. The carabiner held. The branch eventually let go. The magnet came up with what appeared to be part of a shopping cart and something I'm going to describe as "a weight" and leave it at that — probably been down there since the late 90s at minimum.

The gate never budged. Stayed locked the whole time.

If there's a knock on these, it's that the auto-lock takes a tiny bit of getting used to. It's a screw gate, so you twist to open — which is the point, it keeps it from accidentally unclipping — but if you're fumbling with cold gloves on, that extra half-second feels like forever. Not a dealbreaker. Just something to know going in.

I keep two of these in my bag now. One lives on my main rope permanently. The other one's a backup because they're cheap enough that carrying a spare costs basically nothing, and losing a magnet because you didn't have a spare clip is the kind of thing that ruins an afternoon and makes you feel like an idiot on the drive home.

If you're newer to this and still tying your rope directly to your magnet — hear me out — get one of these. The connection is more secure, you'll stop re-tying knots in the field, and if you ever want to run a second magnet or swap setups, you'll be glad you already have the clip system in place.
