I'd Rather Be Magnet Fishing T-Shirt — Worth Wearing?
It's a shirt. It says 'I'd Rather Be Magnet Fishing.' That's kind of the whole pitch.
But honestly? Twenty bucks for something that doubles as a gift and a conversation starter at the boat ramp isn't the worst thing in the world. I've gotten more 'wait, what's magnet fishing?' comments from this shirt than I expected.
It's not gear. It's not going to help you pull a safe out of the river. But if you're looking for something to give someone who just got into the hobby — or you just want to rep the pastime on the drive to the water — this hits that mark without costing you anything you'd miss.
My sister bought me one of these as a birthday gift last year. She had exactly zero context for what magnet fishing actually involves — I don't think she realized I'd been doing it for years — but she found this on Amazon, thought it was funny, and wrapped it up. And honestly, fair enough. It's a solid gift for someone you don't quite know how to shop for.
I wore it out to the Susquehanna on a Saturday morning, mostly as a joke.
Three different people asked me about it. One guy had never heard of magnet fishing. One had seen it on YouTube but never tried it. The third one pulled out his own magnet right there on the bank — I don't know what I expected. So okay, the shirt works. It starts the conversation, which is more than you can say for most graphic tees sitting in the $20 range.
The shirt itself is... fine. It's not going to win any awards for construction. The print is clean and doesn't look like it was ironed on in someone's garage, which I was a little worried about, but after a handful of washes it's held up without cracking. The fit is what you'd expect from a standard tee — not slim, not boxy, just a regular shirt. I'd say it runs true to size. Nothing to get excited about, nothing to complain about.
What it's not is premium. Don't buy this expecting something you'd wear somewhere that matters.
If you're shopping for a birthday or Christmas gift for someone who just got into this hobby — maybe they watched a few TikToks, did one trip, and now they can't shut up about it — this is exactly right. It's cheap enough that you don't feel weird about it, specific enough that they'll actually appreciate it, and it gets to the point without any of the overwrought magnet fishing imagery that some of these shirts lean into. It just says what it says. I'd rather be magnet fishing. Relatable.
The main thing I'd flag: if you're buying this for yourself, you already know whether you want it. There's no hidden depth here. It's a hobby shirt for twenty dollars. What I will say is that it's the kind of thing that sits in your bag and ends up being your default 'I'm about to go do the thing' shirt — which, for me, is actually how I use it now. I grabbed it on the way out the door before a session on the Schuylkill last fall, stuffed my gloves in my pocket, and that was that. Didn't think about it again until some guy on the bridge asked where I got it.
He bought one. I know because he texted me a photo two weeks later.
