CMS Magnetics 550LB Rope — A Solid Start for Under $13
Thirteen bucks. That's it. And it's from a brand that actually makes magnets for a living — not some random listing that pivoted to outdoor gear because the algorithm told them to.
I wouldn't throw this on a 1200LB double-sided setup, but for a beginner running a lighter magnet on weekends? It does the job without making you think too hard about it.
If someone asked me what rope to grab before their first session, this is probably what I'd tell them.
The first thing I noticed was that it didn't smell like a hardware store. I know that sounds like a weird detail but I've bought cheap rope before that came out of the bag smelling like it had been stored next to a gas can since 2009. This one was just... rope. Clean, tightly wound, no weird coating flaking off in my hands.
CMS Magnetics isn't a company that stumbled into magnet fishing gear. They make magnets — like, that's their whole thing. So when they put their name on a rope, there's at least some credibility behind it. It's not like buying a fishing rod from a company that also sells throw pillows.
That matters more than people think.
I took it out on a bridge over a slow creek outside of town — one of those spots where you're mostly pulling up rusted bottle caps and the occasional bike tire, but every now and then something genuinely weird comes up. (Found a hand truck once. No idea. Presumably it rolled off that bridge sometime around 1987 and just... waited.) The rope handled fine. Knot held, didn't slip, didn't feel like it was going to give me any problems. For a $13 rope paired with a mid-range single-sided magnet, that's exactly what you want — nothing interesting happening with the rope so you can pay attention to what's actually going on at the bottom.
The carabiner it comes with is fine. It's not a Black Diamond. You're not clipping into a harness with it. But for clipping onto a magnet eyebolt and dropping it off a bridge railing? Totally adequate. I've seen people swap it out immediately for something heavier-duty and honestly unless you're running serious pull weight, I don't think you need to.
Where I'd pump the brakes a little: it's not a rope you'd want to scale up with.
If you graduate to a bigger magnet — say, anything north of 800LB rated pull — you're going to want to revisit your rope situation. The 550LB breaking strength gives you headroom for a beginner setup, but once you start fishing in deeper, faster water, or you start hitting snags on serious structure, the math gets uncomfortable. Not because this rope is bad, just because the physics change.
But here's the thing — for someone just getting into this, someone who watched a YouTube video and wants to spend a Saturday afternoon pulling stuff out of a canal without dropping $80 on gear first, this is genuinely the right call. You're not over-buying. You're not under-buying. You're getting exactly what you need to figure out if you actually like doing this before committing to anything.
They're cheap enough to keep a backup in your bag without thinking about it. That alone is worth something.
